Frequently Asked Questions

How old should my child be to start working privately with an instructor?

While we prefer to work with children at least 8 years of age we accept students even younger when that child needs to prepare for an audition or performance. Gifted children often display their talent as young as 5 years of age and younger. They love to sing, play an instrument, act or dance at a very young age. These children need guidance in choosing appropriate material and using proper technique. If they have a decent attention span very good results can be achieved in a very young student.

I am a teen or young adult with little prior training but I pick things up pretty quickly. What dance class would be right for me?

We recommend adult level classes for high school students who are in the beginner- intermediate levels of training. Once you have mastered the  terms used in a particular style of dance and are feeling like you would like more of a challenge your instructor will evaluate your progress and will help you make the appropriate changes .

Why should I study dance?

Movement is an important element in giving a good performance in singing, acting, and even playing an instrument. Dance gives you confidence in your movement. Those who wish to act in plays and musicals need instruction in dance to do well in auditions and win roles in high school, college, and community shows.

I have never taken dance and I am not sure I can keep up. Are there beginning  dance classes for teens or tweens like me?

Yes, many of our students have no prior dance training, and regardless of your age or previous experience, you will find classes at D'Alto Studios that teach the basics and build skill and confidence for all stages of development.

Should I learn to play guitar or keyboard? And what about the songwriting course?

These two instruments are essential for the songwriter and performer. Whether your aspirations are in performance or teaching every singer should play one or both instruments. Violin, woodwinds, percussion, and brass players should also learn either piano or guitar. Songwriting is essential for anyone pursuing a career as a recording artist. Our course teaches the basic formulas and helps you unlock your creative abilities as a writer.

What is the difference between traditional piano and keyboard lessons?

We offer both types of instruction at our studio. Keyboard is a contemporary approach for electronic keyboard and piano. Students learn music theory and musicianship using chords, notes ,rhythm, and improvisational skills. This is the method used by professional rock, jazz, country, hip hop, and pop bands Traditional piano is also offered, teaching students to read and play written accompaniment.

Do I need acting lessons?

Even if you do not intend to work as an actor all vocalists can benefit from dramatic training. Every song is an acting piece. Successful performers are able to understand and empathize with the story at the center of the song and offer a characterization of the lyrics to engage the audience.
